OUR MINISTER
Hello,
and welcome to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Flagstaff. My name is Wendy Williams, and I am
the minister of this church.
I
came to this congregation with the belief that it is as deeply committed to the world that surrounds
it as it is to individual and collective spiritual growth. We strive together to bring faith and good will
to all our endeavors, seeking the best in one another as we work, explore, laugh and engage in our community.
Prior
to joining the ministry, I practiced law for fifteen years in Madison, Wisconsin. Over time, I became
disenchanted with the legal system and realized my passion for working for justice could be more fully realized
as a UU minister. I was drawn to Unitarian Universalism because it is a worldwide liberal religious movement that
encourages the development of personal theology with social activism.
In
2001, I entered Meadville-Lombard Theological School at the University of Chicago
(http://www.meadville.edu) to pursue my dream. My intern
year was spent at the Unitarian Church of Davis, California, and I earned my Master of Divinity degree in June, 2005.
My
theology is centered on authenticity, honesty, gratitude, compassion and love. These core values guide my
spiritual practice and reflection. I believe each of us is deserving of love because of who we are and not in
spite of who we are. I believe that each of us has experienced a level of brokenness, and I believe that we can
heal our broken places. Indeed, I believe those places can be the location of our greatest strengths.
Personally,
I am a theist. Instead of the anthropomorphic god of the Judaeo-Christian tradition, I define god as
the mystery that is beyond our understanding, yet which calls us to profound connection with the web of life.
That
is my personal theology, yet our congregation embraces members of many religious and non-religious beliefs.
It is a church that affirms and embraces the diversity which derives from the uniqueness of each of us. There is
no one creed or belief system. All members are held in a place of compassion and respect. Our covenant affirms our
desire to dwell together in peace, to seek knowledge in freedom, and to serve humanity in kindness.
I
invite you to visit our fellowship. Whatever your background, your theology, your interests, you are welcome here.
